Afranius Secundus Terrentius sees himself as a typical Roman historian – curmudgeonly, a lifelong bachelor and someone with no interest in politics. Born during the reign of the tyrannical Emperor Domitian and having lived much of his life during the reign of the ‘good Emperors’, Afranius bears no great fondness for the Imperial system and wishes for the days of the Roman Republic.
As he bears no great fondness for the Empire, Afranius is more than a bit surprised to be summoned by the Emperor Antoninus Pius to come to Rome to help investigate a strange discovery found by the legionnaires of the III Augusta stationed in Africa. With no choice but to accept, Afranius makes the sea voyage to Rome and is greeted by the historian Appian, himself quite interested in the strange object.
